Adele set to make Grammy-night comeback

Adele plans to make a Grammy night comeback with her first performance since undergoing vocal-cord surgery last fall.

In the end, the Recording Academy didn't want to make do with someone like her. They wanted her. And they got her.

While Adele hinted as much earlier this month, it was officially announced Tuesday morning that the six-time Grammy nominee would be singing live at the awards show, marking her first performance since undergoing vocal-cord surgery last fall.

"I'm immensely proud to have been asked to perform at this year's Grammy Awards," the best-selling artist of 2011 said in a statement. "It's an absolute honor to be included in such a night and for it to be my first performance in months is very exciting and of course nerve-racking, but what a way to get back into it all."

Adele, who already has two gilded gramophones to her name, is up for Record and Song of the Year for "Rolling in the Deep," Album of the Year for 21, and Best Pop Solo Performance for "Someone Like You," among other nods.

Earlier this month, she confirmed that she would be performing at the Brit Awards -- the U.K.'s answer to the Grammys -- which take place just nine days after the LL Cool J- hosted U.S. ceremony, thus setting tongues wagging that the more world-watched stage would make for a more prestigious comeback.

And the speculation proved true, as Adele, in a slightly less formal statement than the one she issued to the Academy, revealed on Twitter Tuesday morning.

"Ima be, Ima be singing at the Grammys," she wrote. "It's been so long I started to forget I was a singer! I can't wait, speak soon xx."

Adele's comeback performance -- what exactly she will sing will likely remain a mystery up until the show -- will take place when the Grammys air live Feb. 12.

Fan handcuffs himself to goalpost during game

But on the bright side, he did stop three shots.

It happened today during the Premier League soccer match between Everton and Manchester City in Liverpool, England, when a man handcuffed himself to one of the goalposts. He was released by police after a few minutes, and the game resumed.

The man was evidently protesting the business practices of Ryanair, a budget Irish airline. Stuff.co.uk:

The Daily Mail reported the man was protesting against Ryanair?s recruitment policy after his daughter was denied a job by the budget Irish airline.

A message on his T-shirt read: ?Europe?s greatest training robbers. Ryanair. Lowest wages guaranteed. Stop. Recruitment scamming our children.?

There?s a ?Week of Protest? against Ryanair scheduled for early March, but this guy decided to get an early start on the festivities, it seems.

Oh, there was no score in the game at the time of the handcuffing. Everton eventually prevailed, 1-0.

Most disturbing aspect of this video: the clock, which remains running throughout the ordeal. For American football fans, this has to be nerve wracking.

Battery maker Ener1 files for bankruptcy, tied to Think Global's bumper

Nobody was that surprised when EV maker Think Global drove off into the Chapter 11 sunset, but now it's towed an even bigger company along with it. Ener1 invested heavily in Think and also manufactured the lithium-ion batteries for its cars, but all it got in return was a lethal $69 million hole in its balance sheet. The company was de-listed from Nasdaq last month and now it's seeking bankruptcy protection to restructure $81 million in debts. If it fails to get its finances in order, organizers of the 2014 Winter Olympics may need to look for another power source.

Suspect in Iran missile plot to appeal to EU court (AP)

LONDON ? Lawyers for a retired British businessman accused of plotting to sell missile components to Iran said Tuesday that he will ask a European court to rule on his appeal against being extradited to the United States.

Christopher Tappin, 64, faces charges in Texas over allegations that he offered in 2006 to sell specialized batteries for Hawk missiles for $25,000. He didn't know then that his contacts were undercover U.S. agents, not Iranians, U.S. authorities say.

Tappin faces up to 35 years in jail if convicted in the United States, but he denies the charges and says he was the victim of a sting operation.

Two other men have been sentenced to prison in Texas for trying to buy and export the batteries, according to court records.

Tappin has unsuccessfully fought his extradition in Britain, where a judge ruled against him last year and two High Court judges said Tuesday that he lacked the legal basis to take his fight to the U.K. Supreme Court.

Lawyer Karen Todner said Tappin will instead lodge an application with the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France, within a few days, and will ask the court to halt extradition proceedings until his case is heard.

Another Tappin lawyer, Edward Fitzgerald, had argued that under European human rights legislation, Tappin should not be extradited because he had to care for his sick wife.

U.K. judges have ruled that the severity of the charges against Tappin outweighed his right to not be extradited, but Todner said that the British government had agreed not to begin extradition proceedings for 14 days, to give Tappin time to lodge the European appeal.

Tappin's case is the latest to expose trans-Atlantic tensions over the exchange of criminal suspects.

Lawyers complain that under "fast track" extradition procedures introduced after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the U.S. is not required to offer substantial proof of an allegation when seeking to extradite a suspect from Britain.

But in October 2011, a judge-led review in the U.K. found that extradition agreements between the United States and Britain are fair and unbiased.
