Eating right key to survival of whales and dolphins

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? In the marine world, high-energy prey make for high-energy predators. And to survive, such marine predators need to sustain the right kind of high-energy diet. Not just any prey will do, suggests a new study by researchers from the University of British Columbia and University of La Rochelle, in France.

Published November 21 in the online journal PLOS ONE, the study is the first to show that the survival of whales and dolphins depends on the quality of their diets and this plays an important role in conservation.

"The conventional wisdom is that marine mammals can eat anything," says co-author Andrew Trites, a marine mammal expert at UBC. "However, we found that some species of whales and dolphins require calorie rich diets to survive while others are built to live off low quality prey -- and it has nothing to do with how big they are."

The team compared the diets of 11 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean, and found differences in the qualities of prey consumed that could not be explained by the different body sizes of the predators. The key to understanding the differences in their diets was to look at their muscle performance.

"High energy prey tend to be more mobile, and require their predators to spend more energy to catch them," says Trites. "The two have co-evolved."

J?r?me Spitz, the study's first author, says the research will help better assess the impact of resource changes to marine mammals.

"Species with high energy needs are more sensitive to depletion of their primary prey," says Spitz, a post-doctoral fellow at ULR in France, who completed the research while a visiting scholar at UBC. "It is no longer a question of how much food do whales and dolphins need, but whether they are able to get the right kinds of food to survive."

Nepal rites to banish ghosts of fallen Gurkha soldiers

KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Wrapped in white and with their heads shaven, retired Gurkha soldiers sat cross-legged on the stems of dried rice plants for three days of symbolic and traditional mourning, laying to rest the souls of fellow soldiers who fought and died for Britain.

Hailing from the foothills of the Himalayas, the Gurkhas are known for their fierce fighting skills and big curved khukuri knife. They have served in the British army since 1815 when a peace agreement was reached by the British East India Company after it suffered heavy casualties during an invasion of Nepal.

The Gurkha Army Ex-servicemen's Organisation (GAESO), a group which works for the retired soldiers, said about 60,000 soldiers from Nepal were killed in the two World Wars but that this had never been properly acknowledged.

"Britain did not recognize their contributions and sacrifice", said GAESO President Padam Bahadur Gurung.

The group organized mourning ceremonies where priests from the 17 ethnic groups to which the Gurkha soldiers belonged performed separate rituals at Syangja, 135 km (84 miles) west of Kathmandu.

"Their souls are still wandering around because their funerals were never held according to customs and traditions," GAESO said in a statement. "The souls should be freed by performing the customary rites."

The mourners sat for three days in separate tents and lit butter lamps and incense sticks as thousands of visitors paid tribute to the soldiers in rituals which concluded on Thursday.

Many in Hindu majority Nepal believe that their children and grandchildren cannot live in peace if the customary mourning rites are not performed for deceased ancestors and their souls are left to roam like ghosts.

The Gurkhas were part of the British Indian army before 1947 but were split between the two countries after India became independent from Britain.

Gurkhas have fought in recent years in the Falklands, Iraq and Afghanistan but their numbers, which topped 112,000 in World War II, have fallen to about 3,000 in the British armed forces at present.

Surviving the family holiday meal and that extra helping of parenting ...

Ryan Mcvay / Getty Images stock

By Jacoba Urist

Ah, Thanksgiving dinner. A time to eat a special meal and share traditions with family and friends.? A time of food, reflection and harmony.?

Harmony, that is, until the family dynamics kick in and along with the turkey and stuffing comes a nice, big helping of unsolicited parenting advice from grandparents or older relatives who've already raised their kids and would love to tell you a thing or two about how to raise yours.

Just ask Marissa Klein, a Hoboken, N.J., mom of two who has already had her fill of well-intentioned members of her extended family opining as to whether a 4 p.m. or 7 p.m. Thanksgiving dinner is best for her 8-month-old.

Klein believes, the worst offenders of unwanted advice are usually those who haven?t had a young child or an infant in some time. ?Sure, I would love to give my kids to them so I can hit the cocktails and apps and throw my feet up,? she jokes. But in her experience, the relatives who are the most vocal about what a parent should do at Thanksgiving aren?t usually the ones who jump up to help with the cranky, over-tired toddler.

Many parents, after years of family holidays, have learned a few tried and true tricks in dealing with advice-amped relatives

Suzanne Darmory, mom to Gabriel, 4, and Nathaniel, 3,? says the key to coping in close quarters during the holidays is admitting that your kids aren?t perfectly behaved. If you walk into Thanksgiving dinner and are up front with everyone that your two young boys are a little rambunctious and may have a hard time sitting nicely through a grown-up meal, you?ve at least made a good preemptive strike against any unwanted tips about how to control them better, Darmory says.

As for Andrea Montalbano, a mom, soccer coach and author of the tween book "Lily Out of Bounds," handling the unsolicited advice is a lot like prepping for a soccer game.

?When I coach a team, I understand that they are going to be situations where a player?s parents want to talk to me,? she explains. But she always makes sure that it?s not in the heat of the moment, mid-game, when the kids are on the field. Montalbano says the same rules should apply to Thanksgiving dinner. If you know there?s a relative with a history of giving you mid-meal advice, go to her beforehand and ask for her words of wisdom away from the table, before the turkey comes out.

?Talk to the repeat offender before the meal gets underway,? Montalbano says. ?So maybe they?ve already felt heard when everyone is seated.?? And maybe seat your little guy or girl at an opposite end of the table from that person.

Jenny Rosebstrach, blogger and author of ?Dinner: A Love Story?, believes the best Thanksgiving dinner gatherings are those that are well-prepared, and flexible enough to accommodate any young children who are coming to celebrate. ?Nothing good can come from confronting someone in an aggressive way over turkey,? she says. ?If someone says something really annoying about your child or parenting skills, bring it up on Friday. But try to maintain the sanctity of the meal as long as humanly possible.????

And it turns out a little levity can often be the most well-mannered response at the Thanksgiving table.

?A touch of humor can go a long ?way and defuse a situation,? says Anna Post, a modern manners author and great granddaughter of etiquette guru Emily Post. ?You don?t ever have to be self-deprecating,? Post explains. ?It?s more about setting boundaries. If a relative is intruding on your parenting or asking prying questions about your child, someone is pushing those boundaries, and you are simply resetting them.?

She says it?s always appropriate to respond to an older relative?s parenting advice with a polite smile, and a simple, ?Thanks, I will consider it.???

Of course, in a perfect world, you?ve already been practicing with little James or Julia in advance, teaching them that when we go to grandma and grandpa?s for the holidays we use our utensils and try not to interrupt adults. But pick your battles, Post tells parents. Choose your top Thanksgiving meal proprieties. For example, she says, this Thursday, maybe focus your toddler on not throwing food? and save holding his fork properly for another, less-loaded day.?

Some grandparents?also know?what it takes to?have a drama-free holiday dinner. Deena Mack, a Connecticut grandmother of four kids under the age of 5, tells people to go with the flow when you?ve got little ones in your brood.

With nap schedules, eating habits, and varied kiddie agendas, it can be hard to have a rigid seating arrangement or formal meal, so set your expectations accordingly, suggests Mack.

The best way for everyone to enjoy the holidays with little kids, she says, is to be mindful of everyone?s different schedules and try to be as flexible and relaxed as possible -- and to always respect a young parent's wishes.

Turkey day dinner brings together family and friends, but it can also cause some drama. The rules of etiquette can seem vague for this holiday, but Anna Post, co-author of "Emily Post's Etiquette: The 18 Edition," is here to make sure you can maintain harmony at your dinner table.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Fiona Apple is postponing her South American tour to be with her dying dog, Janet.

Apple says in a heartfelt, handwritten letter to fans posted on her website and Facebook page Tuesday that the nearly 14-year-old Pit bull is her best friend, mother, daughter and benefactor and "the one who taught me what love is." The singer writes, "I will not be the woman who puts her career ahead of love and friendship," and asks her fans for their blessings and patience.

Rep. Allen West concedes after Fla. recount fight

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Tea party firebrand Rep. Allen West conceded his re-election fight Tuesday, two weeks after the vote gave way to court appearances, two partial recounts and unending accusations by his camp that the vote count wasn't fair.

"There are certainly still inaccuracies in the results" but not enough to change the outcome, the Republican freshman said in a statement conceding the race to Democratic newcomer Patrick Murphy.

"While a contest of the election results might have changed the vote totals, we do not have evidence that the outcome would change," West added.

Murphy campaign manager Anthony Kusich said he was not aware of any concession call to his candidate, simply an email that was publicly distributed.

In his own statement, Murphy said he was "humbled by Congressman West's gracious concession" and eager to get to work on behalf of all voters.

"To those who supported my opponent, my door is open and I want to hear your voice," Murphy said. "I campaigned on a message of reaching across the aisle to get things done for the people of the Treasure Coast and Palm Beaches, and that is as important in this district as it is in Washington."

Murphy declared victory hours after the vote, even as thousands of absentee, provisional and overseas ballots were processed and two partial recounts undertaken. But West's campaign remained skeptical of the results, largely in St. Lucie County, where elections officials acknowledged missteps.

An initial recount of some early ballots in St. Lucie gave West a slight bump. His campaign fought for a fuller recount, and received it, but it only improved Murphy's margin of victory. St. Lucie's final tally ultimately was discarded because it didn't meet a state deadline. Numbers certified by the state Tuesday give Murphy the win by 1,904 votes.

Many have speculated West could find a new career in the place where he has been frequently seen, on cable television, but he has not said what his next step will be. "Only God knows what is in store for each of us," he said in his statement, adding, "I will continue to fight for our republic."

Whatever the next step, the contest between Murphy and West will go down as one of the most expensive in congressional history. Murphy eked out the win though he was out-fundraised more than 4-to-1.

West, 51, is a favorite among the most conservative reaches of the Republican Party. He has made a string of headline-grabbing statements, from calling a majority of congressional Democrats communists to saying President Barack Obama, Rep. Nancy Pelosi and others should "get the hell out of the United States."

Murphy, 29, portrayed West as an extremist who had done little else in Washington than stoke partisan fires.

In his concession statement, West offered congratulations to Murphy, saying "I pray he will serve his constituents with honor and integrity, and put the interests of our nation before his own."
