A contemporary art auction has made £108.8m - a London record for such a sale, auction house Sotheby's has said.

The top lot was Francis Bacon's Crouching Nude, which made £8.3m, while there were artist records for Germans Sigmar Polke and Georg Baselitz.

An Andy Warhol electric pink acrylic and silkscreen ink on canvas of Blondie singer Deborah Harry went for £3.7m.

The previous London contemporary art auction record of £95m was achieved at Sotheby's in 2008.

The second most expensive lot was an early untitled painting by celebrated New York artist Jean-Michel Basquiat which went for £5.4m.

Some 34 works from the Duerckheim private collection of post-war German art sold for a total £60.4m.

The Duerckheim Collection, which belonged to German industrialist Christian Duerckheim, is considered to be the most significant German art of the 1960s and 1970s to come to market.

Among Duerckheim lots were Gerhard Richter's 1024 Farben, from 1974, which sold for £4.3m while his Madchen im Liegestuhl sold for £4.1m.

Mouth by Gilbert and George Mouth by Gilbert and George, from Dave Stewart's collection, fetched £145,000

Richter's photorealistic work Schwestern, from 1967, was bought for £2.5m by a German collector who has announced he will lend the painting to the Kunstmuseum Bonn.

Sotheby's chairman of contemporary art Cheyenne Westphal, said Wednesday night was the night "German art went global".

"The strong results of the remarkable Duerckheim Collection represent a triumph for German art and reflect the extraordinary works offered," she added.

The record-breaking works by Polke and Baselitz were also part of the collection.

Polke's Dschungel - or Jungle - fetched £5.8m, smashing his previous record of £2.7m, while Baselitz's Spekulatius achieved £3.2m.

Early Damien Hirst spot painting Dantrolene (Being God for Dave) - owned by Eurythmic Dave Stewart - went for £1.1m.

Hirst's 1992 Acridine went for £601,000 and Mouth, by Gilbert and George, sold for £145,000. Both were also owned by Stewart.

All sale prices include the buyer's premium.

Spain: al-Qaida possibly buying Libyan war weapons (AP)

MADRID ? Sophisticated Libyan army weapons are being trafficked and possibly sold to al-Qaida's affiliate in North Africa, giving the group the potential to increase instability in a key part of the continent, Spain's interior minister said Thursday.

Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said al-Qaida of the Islamic Maghreb, or AQMI, is a growing menace that could conceivably spread outside its natural homeground of the Sahel region of Africa unless Western countries step up efforts to counter it.

He briefed reporters during a break in a meeting with colleagues from five other EU countries and U.S. Homeland Security Director Janet Napolitano.

The countries agreed among other things to set up a permanent coordination mechanism for their countries' liaison people in the Sahel region ? the vast, bone-dry stretch of land just below sub-Saharan Africa that includes countries such as Mauritania, Niger, Mali and Chad.

They also agreed to reach out to the African Union to step up joint counterterrorism efforts, Perez Rubalcaba said.

Perez Rubalcaba said fairly sophisticated weapons from Libyan army forces fighting to keep Moammar Gadhafi in power as rebel forces try to oust him are being sold by traffickers at Libya's southern border and possibly ending up in the hands of AQMI.

"The Libyan crisis is having an influence on AQMI," he said. "One that we find particularly negative is the possible appearance of arms from the Libyan army, or what remains of it, in the hands of terrorists."

The Libyan civil war is giving AQMI potential to increase its influence in the Sahel region, where it is active after having first surfaced in Algeria.

"Organized crime would probably grow because it is clear they are linked, and risks for Europe and the United States would grow," Perez Rubalcaba said.

Besides Rubalcaba and Napolitano, the meeting was attended by representatives of Italy, Germany, France, Britain and Poland.

Napolitano stressed the need to step up security against terrorists targeting the transport of goods across the world.

"The global supply chain security issue is one of our priorities," Napolitano told The AP in an interview.

"We had been working on this before last October but when AQAP ? al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula ? had hidden bombs in two toner cartridges that were put in air cargo it illustrated that they were willing to try to blow up a plane, be it a passenger plane or a cargo plane. So we accelerated our efforts in this regard."

Napolitano said material confiscated at the compound where Osama bin Laden had been living in Pakistan ? and killed in a U.S. raid in early May ? confirmed Washington was on the right track, adding that the material mentioned surface transportation as a target for attack.

She said the U.S. government was in contact with domestic and international air, land and sea transport institutions to see how best to minimize this threat.

"There's much that can be done," she said. "The movement of cargo around the world supplies the international economy and you have got to make sure that there is security in that movement because jobs depend on it, manufacturing depends on it."

Gingrich signs Cut, Cap and Balance pledge (Daily Caller)

GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich signed onto the Cut, Cap and Balance pledge today, joining other presidential candidates Herman Cain, Congressman Ron Paul (R-Texas) and Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pennsylvania) and former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty.

The pledge urges Congress to oppose raising the debt ceiling limit unless three conditions are met: cuts to federal spending to reduce the debt, caps on federal spending and passage of a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution. (Cain signs a book deal)

?Balanced budgets are achieved by those who are committed,? Gingrich said in a press release. ?Fiscal discipline requires lawmakers to be smart not cheap and requires a different type of thinking than we see in Washington. I am proposing bold solutions because we have big problems. I pledge to be a President who will rein in deficits, the debt and out of control spending. It can be done, I know because we?ve done it before.?

Gingrich was Speaker of the House when Congress balanced the budget during the Clinton administration.

The GOP presidential candidates who have not signed so far are: former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-Minnesota) and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson.

Thirty members of the House of Representatives and 12 Senators have also signed the pledge.

The Celebrity Moment

Earlier this week Turntable.fm crossed a milestone. No, it wasn?t hitting a reported 140K users one month after launching, nor was it being added to the list of portfolio companies for First Round Capital (granted it was just a logo refresh from ?the company's previous product incarnation, StickyBits). In fact, the ultimate sign that the crowdsourced music service had arrived was more subtle than a milestone metric and ran under the radar for anyone who isn?t finely attuned to these things; on Tuesday the artist Sir Mix A Lot (of ?Baby?s Got Back? fame) DJ?d a set on Turntable.fm replete with a custom hacked avatar that differentiated him from the available cookie cutter options.

Carolina Living Real Estate Homes For Sale ? Carolina Living Real ...

According to a recent article at?CNN-Money, Some 4.2 million mortgage borrowers are either seriously delinquent or have had their cases referred to lawyers to pursue foreclosure auctions, according to LPS Applied Analytics.

Nationwide, it takes an average of 565 days to foreclose on borrowers in default from their first missed payments to the final auction. In New York, the average is 800 days and in Florida, where the ?robo-signing? issue is particularly combative, it?s 807.

In this article specific examples were given where borrowers have stayed in their homes as long as 5 years without making a mortgage payment.

An example of what has happened across the nation:

A borrower purchased a two-bedroom on Tampa Bay in 1998 for $135,000.

As the waterfront property?s value skyrocketed, eventually reaching $750,000, they refinanced twice (once to expand a business), and took out a second mortgage. They now owe more than $600,000 on the home, which is worth only $235,000.

Until we get out of this mess, the housing market will continue to drag! ?However if you are looking to buy a foreclosure in the Charlotte and Lake Norman areas, the time may be right.

North Korea slashes food rations: aid worker (AFP)

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) ? North Korea has drastically cut public food handouts as it heads towards a new hunger crisis with people again eating grass to survive, one of the most experienced aid workers in the isolated nation said.

Food rations have been cut to as low as 150 grammes (5.3 ounces) a day per person in some parts of the country as foreign donations collapse and higher international prices make imports more expensive, said Katharina Zellweger, head of a Swiss government aid office in Pyongyang.

At the same time, Zellweger, who has been active in North Korea for 15 years, said there are definite signs of change.

A new moneyed middle class is emerging while the strictly regimented state had lauded a new "mini-MBA" run by her agency using Hong Kong teachers.

Food supplies to the estimated population of 23 million people have been controlled through a public distribution system for decades.

"It works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't work," the head of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation office in Pyongyang told a group of UN correspondents.

"The lowest I heard was 150 grammes per person per day, and I even heard that in Pyongyang the rations are cut to 200 grammes per person per day."

Diplomats say the rations have been halved over the past 18 months. One hundred grammes of rice produces about 250-350 calories a day, experts said.

Zellweger said she had seen "a lot more malnourished children" on recent travels around the country.

"You see more people out in the fields and on the hillsides digging roots, cutting grass or herbs. So there are signs that there is going to be a crisis."

North Korea went through a famine in the late 1990s in which hundreds of thousands died of hunger.

"What we had this year is many small shocks which is building up to new crisis. What I think is the question we are all grappling with, is when is the tipping point? When does the situation shift from chronic malnutrition to acute malnutrition?"

Zellweger said that "a long, miserable cold winter" had badly hit spring crops and potato seedlings. This has compounded reduced foreign aid as North Korea faces a hardline attitude from the rival South Korea and the United States over its nuclear weapons programme.

The United States has demanded proof that food aid will not be misused before it resumes shipments. South Korea used to provide up to 350,000 tonnes a year of fertilizer. This stopped in 2007.

The World Food Programme sent 136,000 tonnes of food to North Korea in 2008 but donations have dried up and this fell to 55,000 tonnes last year and by this month only 11,000 tonnes had been sent this year, Zellweger said.

"Hunger is not necessarily visible in the streets," said the aid worker, who worked for a Swiss charity in the North before taking over the Swiss government programme five years ago.

"If you don't have a trained eye it is a lot of hidden misery and that was also the case in 1995. It was not hunger in the streets, it was very much behind closed doors."

Only the trained eye can see the changes in Pyongyang in recent years.

Zellweger called it the four Ms: the emergence of private markets, the greater role of money, mobile phones which have set off a communications revolution -- even though no calls abroad can be made -- and the emergence of a middle class in the capital.

"People are much better dressed, much more colourful. Before it was olive green and blue, now it is bright and colourful. Girls, if they can, dress more modern. They wear makeup and a bit of jewelery. There are also more cars in Pyongyang. There is just a bit more drive than a year ago."

The Swiss agency runs agricultural programmes but the change can really be seen in a "mini-MBA" course that her agency has launched at the Pyongyang Business School, said Zellweger.

Teachers flown in each month by the Hong Kong Management Association hold seminars for middle managers who take a test, do group work and have to attend 10 of the 12 seminars to get a diploma.

"Hong Kong people are used to dealing with people from all walks of life. Many of them have overseas factories and on top of that they have experience of China. That brings them so much closer to the situation in the North."

Change cannot be imposed from the outside, said the long-time North Korea watcher, but the government is "very happy" with the results.

Wilmington, NC Thyroid Problems Helped Through Proper Nutrition ...

In Wilmington thyroid issues can surface without warning or definitive pre-existing condition. This is the gland that releases chemicals which ultimately determine how fast the body can turn food into energy. This is called metabolism. When this gland does not send the correct signals, various organic responses can occur. High or low metabolizing of food is the most commonly recognized symptom.

Scientists have found links between nutritional health and glandular health. The body?s rate of metabolism is not just related to body weight, but to overall health as well. While a slow rate would mean that you gain weight and a fast rate would mean that you lose weight, each is an indication of poor overall health and nutritional absorption.

Using nutrients to help the gland return to its normal rate of function is done through the careful analysis of your current diet, your eating trends, and other related medical issues that could influence glandular health.

You can expect to keep a food diary that marks the quantity and time of the food you ate as well as what the food product was. This will help nutritional therapists develop a clear understanding of how nutrition is impacting your condition. Natural and fresh foods will give you a higher level of nutritional intensity than prepackaged frozen or processed foods.

Proper nutritional guidance can help you get your system back into a more natural flow that allows the organs, glands, and functions of the body to work in a healthier manner. Balanced nutrition with focal key elements works on the cellular level. This means the individual cells are able to be restored to their natural state.

For Wilmington thyroid help that keeps its focus on developing a long-term plan for health and well-being you need to have a thorough evaluation. Only through determining all of the systems within your body that require high levels of specific nutrients, will a nutritional therapist be able to offer you solid health guidance.

For help with problems in the thyroid and other related issues, contact your Wilmington thyroid center. You can learn more about symptoms and therapeutic measures that are taken to address these condition by visiting http://WilmingtonThyroid.com today.

Labour Party 'must change to win'

Ed MilibandMr Miliband's plan to abandon shadow cabinet elections has come under fire from backbenchers
Related Stories

Labour leader Ed Miliband is to admit his party's leadership lost touch both with its own members and the public.

In a speech in Wrexham to his national policy forum, he will propose reforms aimed at making the party less insular and its decision-making more open.

He will say the last Labour government did not listen to concerns over issues like immigration and housing benefits.

The Tories say Labour ignores the way its leader is elected. They criticise the trade unions' role in that process.

In his speech to party activists and trade unionists, Mr Miliband is expected to unveil a series of proposals.

Its annual conference will be opened up to campaign groups and charities - who will be allowed to speak from the floor in debates although they will not get to vote on policies.

Local Labour parties will be allowed to organise petitions on issues which they feel ought to be debated at national level, and if they can demonstrate enough support, those issues will be placed on the agenda at future meetings of the policy forum.

There will also be a new code of conduct for the party's candidates and politicians to ensure they meet voters regularly and are transparent about their expenses.

And following on from an idea trialled in Oxford and Birmingham, local parties across the UK will get extra resources if they sign up more supporters.

Mr Miliband is also expected to cite the decision under Prime Minister Gordon Brown to abolish the 10p starting rate of income tax, which saw millions of low earners lose out.

In his speech Mr Miliband is expected to say: "'Old Labour forgot about the public. New Labour forgot about the party.

“The party was trying to tell us what the people wanted us to know ”

Ed Miliband

"And, by the time we left office, we had lost touch with both.'

Turning to the policies of the last Labour government, he will say: "We went from six people making decisions in a smoke-filled committee room to six people making the decisions from a sofa in Whitehall. Sometimes less than six.

"But the party was trying to tell us what the people wanted us to know. They were telling us about immigration, about housing benefits and about the 10p tax. We didn't listen."

He will go on to defend plans to scrap elections to the shadow cabinet. The move to take sole responsibility for frontbench appointments has been criticised by some backbench MPs who feel they will be distanced from the party's top team.

Mr Miliband will say shadow cabinet elections sees the party "look inwards not outwards".

"I want us to be an alternative government," he will say. "The only election members of the shadow cabinet should be worrying about is the general election."

BBC political correspondent Iain Watson said it is understood that Mr Miliband does not intend to address the party's leadership rules highlighted by the Conservatives, which allowed him to be elected with the help of union votes, despite more party members favouring his brother, David.

He has already said these will be revised as part of a series of changes which will go to the party's autumn conference, under the banner Refounding Labour.

Photography Book Review: 'Tent Life: Haiti' | Arts Entertainment ...

RESILIENCE: Photographer Wyatt Gallery captures the lives of Haitian survivors in the aftermath of the 7.9 magnitude earthquake in 2010. (Umbrage Books)

In the book Tent Life: Haiti, photographer Wyatt Gallery attempts to capture the lives of people in Haiti in the aftermath of the devastating January 12, 2010 earthquake. The book is part photography project, part charity endeavor?100 percent of the royalties go toward three Haitian organizations: J/P Haitian Relief Organization, Healing Haiti, and the Global Syndicate.

Many of the photos throughout the pages of the book were taken inside or in front of tent homes that were meant to be temporary shelters for some of the 1.5 million Haitians displaced by the 7.9 magnitude earthquake. The human subjects range from children to elderly Haitians, many of them head-to-toe shots that show people walking barefoot through mud and trash. These photos reveal to the reader the resilience of the Haitian people amidst their extreme poverty.

There are also several panoramic shots of the shelters, which provide the reader with some perspective on the enormous size of these tent cities of Haiti.

Although Gallery makes an admirable attempt to depict the Haitians living in tent camps in a humane and positive light, his photographs somehow fall short of being engaging, striking, or moving. Many shots are densely shadowed, some to the point where the people?s faces cannot be seen clearly.

More importantly, many of the photos taken inside the camps leave the viewer at a distance from the subjects of the photographs, whether structural or human. In short, the overall effect of Gallery?s photographs fails to convey a strong sense of environment or make a solid human connection for the reader.

Ironically, one of Gallery's most striking photographs in the book is not of people living in tents, but the ruins of the Cathedral of the Lady of the Assumption. He effectively shows the former splendor of the building juxtaposed against its crumbled ruins. In that photograph, although it is a building, Gallery deftly succeeds at depicting both a victim and a survivor.

Tent Life: Haiti was published in April 2011 and includes 74 color photographs, Gallery?s journal entries of his personal experiences in Haiti, a historical timeline of the country, and an essay by famed Haitian-American novelist Edwidge Danticat.

The book is instructive for anybody wishing to catch a glimpse of what life is like for many of the survivors of the earthquake. It is also a worthwhile way to support charitable organizations that are working to rebuild Haiti and help the people there. But overall, the book is lacking in emotional impact, and comes across mostly as an ambitious, but unfulfilled project.

US lawmakers rebuke Obama over Libya (AFP)

WASHINGTON (AFP) ? In a symbolic but scathing rebuke to President Barack Obama, the US House of Representatives on Friday rejected a resolution authorizing US military action in Libya for one year.

Lawmakers voted 295-123 to defeat the measure and and moved to take up a second resolution aimed at sharply reducing the US role in NATO-led, UN-mandated operations against Libyan strongman Moamer Kadhafi's forces.

It was the first time that the House rejected authorizing US military action since April 1999, when it repudiated then-president Bill Clinton's air campaign against Serbia in the conflict over Kosovo.

"We are disappointed by that vote. We think that now is not the time to send the kind of mixed message that it sends," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters aboard the presidential Air Force One airplane.

"The writing is on the wall for Colonel Kadhafi. Now is not the time to let up," he said.

Seventy of the White House's Democratic allies broke with Obama to help defeat the measure after a bitter debate shaped by the US public's deep war weariness after a decade of conflicts, notably in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"We don't have enough wars going on?" thundered Democratic Representative Dennis Kucinich, who has played a leading role in opposing the US role in Libya.

"This war is a distraction. Our flailing economy demands the full attention of Congress and the president," he said, as the House defied a last-ditch appeal from US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and a warning from NATO's chief.

Just eight Republicans backed the resolution, amid deep anger in both parties at Obama's decision not to seek congressional permission for launching a military operation within the 60-day window required by the 1973 War Powers Act.

Republican Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said she did not support what she called a "dangerous" withdrawal from NATO operations but called Obama's strategy adrift.

Ros-Lehtinen warned against giving the House's "blessings" to "an apparently open-ended commitment with goals that remain only vaguely defined" even as the conflict neared the 100-day mark.

But Democratic House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, who called the Kosovo vote "one of the darkest days" of his time in office, warned lawmakers risked straining Washington's ties overseas.

"The message will go to Moamer Kadhafi, the message will go to our NATO allies, the message will go to every nation of the world that America does not keep faith with its allies," he said.

The House was expected to approve a measure aiming to cut off funding for US military operations except for tasks in support of NATO, like aerial refueling, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, planning, or search and rescue.

That measure, which meant to halt direct combat operations like drone strikes and bombings, was expected to die in the Democratic-led Senate.

Lawmakers assailed Obama's failure to get their permission, citing the war powers measure and the US Constitution that makes him the military's commander-in-chief but reserves for Congress the power to declare war.

"The president is becoming an absolute monarch, and we must put a stop to that right now if we don't want to become an empire instead of a republic," said Democratic Representative Jerrold Nadler.

"Yes, the president should have come to us early, should have come to us at the very beginning, and allowed Congress to carry out its constitutional obligations," said Democratic Representative John Garamendi.

But US forces are acting under a UN mandate "to defend and protect" Libyan civilians, and "we need to provide the president with the necessary powers to carry out that obligation in a very limited period of time," he added.

The debate came as NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen warned in an interview with the French newspaper Le Figaro that the Congress risked "damaging" the alliance's efforts but said he was "confident" they would not.

The United States joined Britain and France in attacking Kadhafi's forces on March 19 in a UN-authorized mission to protect civilians as the regime attempted to crush an uprising sparked by the regional "Arab Spring."

The United States withdrew into a supporting role when NATO took command of the mission on March 31.

Fiction Writers Review ? Blog Archive ? Writer and Critic in One ...

jenny_shankJust about every writer in the American West has heard the name Jenny Shank. Her tireless and steadfast work as a reviewer and literary newshound, especially as the Books & Writers Editor at NewWest.net, has made her both a beacon and a lodestone to readers and writers of the many divergent strains of Western literature. If it?s literary and comes from the West, chances are good that Jenny Shank has read it, written about it, or told you that it?s coming down the pike.

But all along, Shank has been a writer too. While building up NewWest.net?s presence in the book world she also published work in Alaska Quarterly Review, Image, McSweeney?s Internet Tendency, and Prairie Schooner. Now her first novel, The Ringer, has been published by Permanent Press. It tells the story of two Denver families at the turn of the millennium?one of a Mexican immigrant killed in a case of mistaken identity, and the other of the cop who shot him?who come into inevitable conflict over their shared passion for baseball. We talked about writing, juggling kids, the grunt work of self-publicizing, and the role of the reviewer in contemporary literary culture.

Interview:

Steven Wingate: Did all the debut books you?ve reviewed and all the first-time author interviews you?ve done prepare you for your first book experience, or were you blindsided by it the way most debut writers are?

Jenny Shank: The main thing I was blindsided by was the fact that this happened?at long last, my novel is being published. I wrote an essay for the January/February issue of Poets & Writers about this called ?The Ham-and-Egger,? about how I?d almost given up?or at least considered going on hiatus until my kids were bigger?when happily I found an agent and publisher. I hope I don?t ever take this for granted, because I have friends who are talented, committed writers, and they don?t have books published yet, and because of that, some people in their lives don?t take what they do seriously. But I do?they are true artists, continuing to work on improving their craft despite limited recognition for what they do.

the_ringerBut I think your question is more about what I?ve learned from being able to talk to other writers. I?d say that overall, my first book experience has been a quiet one. The Ringer is being published by The Permanent Press, which publishes about twelve to fourteen books a year. Maybe one advantage I had was that because I?m with a small press, I knew I?d have to do a lot on my own?I set up my own website and social media efforts, set up my own readings in bookstores, and I?ve tried to find people to review the book. I have talked to a few writers who weren?t aware that they needed to be that active. You have to set up your own website and stick your email on it so anybody can contact you, and you build a relationship with readers. My website is not as pretty as some, but very few of us can be Mohammed Ali, nimble and pretty. I?m happy with it just being nimble.

One thing agents and editors tell new writers is to develop a ?platform,? something of a cross between a clear readership demographic and a virtual space in which people can find you. Did having such a definable Internet presence change the way you approached putting out your manuscript and, later, your book?

That?s a good question. I guess I?ve never thought of myself as being well known. I don?t have a sense of how many people read the articles I write for New West. I have noticed, though, that writing for New West and having one stable hub on the Internet has made me more findable to people who share my interests than I was during years I wrote book reviews for the Rocky Mountain News and was the Denver editor of The Onion. People who have an interest in the literature of this region contact me and let me know about books and literary events, and I?m happy to hear from them?they help me do my job.

I know that my agent mentioned my journalism career when he was sending around my manuscript to editors, but if I have a ?platform? of any kind, it obviously didn?t sway anyone! The Permanent Press doesn?t care if you have a platform or not. Martin Shepard, the publisher, recently wrote on his blog about one novelist he?s published whose book received great reviews but only sold 450 copies. But Martin said he admires this writer?s work so much that he?s going to keep publishing his books.

the_dew_breakerHaving a platform might be especially important for nonfiction writers, but it can be beneficial for literary fiction writers, too. I think the literary fiction writers who have the best ?platforms? in a very broad definition of that term are those who spend a lot of time helping other people. Examples of this are Dave Eggers, with his many different publishing ventures and charities or Hannah Tinti, who founded One Story and has helped many writers find an audience over the years, and in turn benefited from an eager audience when her books were published. Or Edwidge Danticat?I think practically everything I know about Haiti comes from her stunning books. She has been an advocate for Haiti, and frequently writes and comments on radio or television about her native country. There are several writers who are known for being wonderful teachers, such as William Kittredge and Steve Almond, and this I?m sure generates a lot of interest and goodwill when their books are published.

It could seem daunting to try to help others on as grand a scale as these writers have, but anyone can start on a small level?say, apply it to your Twitter feed. Instead of talking about yourself, talk about other people?s books, participate in #fridayreads, tell jokes, point out interesting websites, answer people?s questions. Then if you slip in something about how your book just got a great review, or how you have a reading coming up, no one wants to cold-cock you.

We?ve done an AWP panel together called ?To West or Not to West? that focused on various ways that writers based in the West deal with (or choose not to deal with) the mythos of the region. The Ringer takes place in an urban environment and avoids the Western mystique, but I noticed that your acknowledgment page ends with ?And Denver, I love you.? How does the West and ?Western-ness? play into the novel?

dagoberto_gilbThe West is many different things, but I guess if you asked someone who didn?t read a lot of contemporary books set in the West what they thought a western novel would be like, they?d imagine horses and cowboys, or at the very least outdoorsy adventure type stuff like the stories in Pam Houston?s Cowboys Are My Weakness. But there are plenty of big cities in the West. One of my favorite writers of the urban West is Dagoberto Gilb, who portrays city life in Texas and California with candor, humor, and grit, while still giving his stories a significant ?western? flavor.

Western-ness plays into The Ringer in a number of ways. Being located in the West shapes the demographics of the city of Denver, whose population is one-third Latino (mostly Mexican-Americans). The land that the state of Colorado was formed out of is roughly one-third Mexico territory, one-third Texas territory, and one-third Louisiana Purchase land. There are Latino families who have lived in Colorado continuously since it was a part of Mexico. My character Patricia Maestas comes from this kind of a long-standing Colorado family.

The West doesn?t have as fraught a history of race relations as does the American South or cities such as Boston or Chicago. But if you look into the history of Denver, there are moments where race relations became tense, such as during the late ?60s and early ?70s, when Chicano activists protested for their rights, and Denver was a hub of that activity (in my novel, the characters Lupe and T?o Tiger were actively involved in the protests of that era).

The Ringer was inspired by the 1999 shooting of Ismael Mena by the Denver police?in that case, as in my novel, the cops enforced an immediate entry warrant (a no-knock raid) at the wrong address. This incident gripped me in part because in its wake, race relations in Denver became tenser than I?d ever seen them in my lifetime.

Toni Morrison has said that she wrote the kind of books she wanted to see, books that she didn?t see being written by others. I don?t see a lot of literary novels being written about Denver, or the urban West, and so I wrote my own. And I absolutely had to express my love and appreciation for my hometown of Denver in the acknowledgments?I?ve been waiting a long time to do that!

North Denver Skyline

The novel is set in Denver during an un-named year at the turn of the 21st century. (I know it isn?t today because a few landmarks have shut down or changed names.) Why did you set the story in the recent historical past rather than in the present, and what flexibility did you gain?

I?d like to say that I ruminated on this decision and carefully chose the perfect year to set it in for brainy structural reasons, but the truth is that I worked on the book for eight years, and it?s set around when I started writing it. As I mentioned, I was inspired by a 1999 shooting in Denver. I set the book in the year 2000?I think I started writing it in 2002. I wanted it to reflect Denver as it existed at that time, because a number of policies and laws were changed in response to the outrage that shooting caused. For example, no-knock raids are now outlawed in Denver?or at least are extremely rare now. There were also a couple of plot details that only worked if I set it in 2000?for example, the fact that Salvador moves pretty freely between Mexico and America, even before he had citizenship. After 9-11, that changed. Also, I thought the simplest way for Salvador to have been granted U.S. citizenship was through the 1981 amnesty that made it possible for farm workers to gain citizenship, so I needed to make his age and the dates match up with that year.

You alternate your narration between two characters that appear to be alien to you?a male police officer and a Latina mother who got married before she finished college?and you?re in close third person on both of them. How did you get to know them?

Ed and Patricia do seem like they?d be alien to me if you compare the details of their lives to mine, but the truth is that I feel close to them. Although these characters are both completely fictional, they grew out of my experiences.

coney island school bus lotGrowing up, I attended Denver Public Schools during the era of court-ordered busing for integration. Many white families left the district, but mine stayed, so starting when I was six years old, I rode a bus about thirty minutes away from my home to neighborhoods that were completely different from mine. Sometimes I attended schools that had a majority Mexican-American population, other times I went to schools that were mostly black. This taught me that there are always two sides to any story, if not ten, so that?s why it felt comfortable for me to split the narrative of The Ringer into two perspectives.

I didn?t do much research for Patricia, apart from a few details I included on her job as a nurse; I felt I knew her well. She could have been any of the girls I went to school with. I also spent a lot of time in the area of north Denver where she lives when I started writing the book, because for six years I mentored a girl who lived in that neighborhood. I did have to research some details about Patricia?s husband Salvador?he?s a Mexican immigrant, and that experience is foreign to me, but Patricia seemed like a regular Denver girl like me.

san rafael's finestFor the Ed sections, I did a lot of research on everything that had to do with police. My cousin?s husband is a cop in Omaha, and his stories were helpful to me. I?d meet cops periodically, and just start talking to them. Once at a wedding, I met a woman whose dad was a cop in San Francisco, and we just started talking about what it was like when she tried to start dating?I got a fun scene out of that. I read a lot of books and I pored over the newspaper, collecting articles about different cases. I spoke to Mike Mosco of the Denver Police Protective Association about the procedures followed after an officer-involved shooting. But Ed himself?his love for his family and in baseball, was something I derived from observation and experience.

You?re a mother of two young children?four and two?and that has to affect your writing time. How long have you been working on The Ringer? Did your working habits change with parenthood, were you able to sustain your practice just as you had before?

I started writing The Ringer about four years before my four-year-old daughter was born. Before she arrived, I was able to finish a draft that had all the chapters in it and most of the significant plot details in place. I took some time off, and then I revised that draft during the two years before my son was born. I?d just about given up at that point. I thought, here I am with two kids, several freelance jobs, and no childcare?maybe I?ll take a break from writing for a while. But I?ve always been good about submitting work regularly?rejection doesn?t bother me any more, unless there?s something unusually sadistic to the rejection. So I found the time to send query letters to agents and signed with an agent when my son was three months old. My agent started submitting the book, and he found a publisher for it. Judith and Martin Shepard, my editors at The Permanent Press, wanted me to make some subtle changes to the ending. They were right about those changes. I think I?d be finishing up a draft every time I was nine months pregnant and I?d kind of crash land the ending. So that gave me an impetus to get myself back to work, even with such limited time.

permanent_press

I work only in very small increments when I can get my kids to take a simultaneous nap or my daughter is at preschool and my son is asleep. That gives me one to two hours a day, at most, and I also have to squeeze in writing two or three articles a week and editing New West?s book page so I can make some money! But I find that having such a short time period in which to work reduces my procrastination. I?m all about the power hour.

FWR recently ran a series on the role of the critic in contemporary letters. (See tag: criticsm). As someone who works both sides of that divide, do you have anything to add to that conversation?

I?ve been publishing book reviews and author interviews for over a decade now (mostly for the Rocky Mountain News, The Onion A.V. Club, Dallas Morning News, Boulder Daily Camera, and New West).

reading_like_a_writerI started writing book reviews for the Rocky Mountain News right out of college, because I like to think about the book I?ve just read for a while before jumping into the next book. Writing book reviews makes me an attentive reader, and most of what I know how to do as a fiction writer I?ve learned from careful reading. (I think Francine Prose?s Reading Like a Writer is one of the best writing guides there is.)

When I started out as a book reviewer, I didn?t have a mission in mind. I was assigned the books I wrote about for Rocky Mountain News, so although I always tried to be fair and judge each book on its own merits, I wrote some negative reviews. Now that I choose the books that I?m going to review, I only review books that I can recommend?I might offer some criticisms, but I?m only going to review a book if I think it?s worth a reader?s time. I review about fifty books a year for New West?why waste any of those slots on tearing a book down?

And now at New West I think of myself as having a mission: drawing attention to the fine writers of my region, a region I think tends to be ignored by the national press and that now has very few press outlets covering its books. Someone on Twitter called me ?the last standing book reviewer in the Rocky Mountain region,? and there are a few others out there, but not many?the Boise Weekly, for example, runs some good book coverage in Idaho.

The Rocky Mountain News had a great books section, and that paper is gone. A few months ago, the Denver Post cut back its book coverage and let go of its book editor, and now it runs just a few locally written pieces, alongside wire stories, mostly from the Washington Post. I love the Washington Post Book World, but it kind of sucks that if you?re a writer in Colorado and if Washington Post passes on covering your book, there?s a good chance that nobody in Colorado will be able to hear about it. (I imagine this is true of a lot of states, not just Colorado.) So my mission is to keep these books from being ignored. The newspapers and magazines that still have big book review sections may not care about the Rocky Mountain West, but the people who live here do, and they like to read books set in this region. Maybe there aren?t a lot of people who care about this, but I do, and I?m writing book reviews for those kindred spirits out there who love the contemporary literature of the American West like I do.

How is your writing going with the first book out?

Right now I?m only able to work on revisions, short stories, and essays. I want to write another novel, but I don?t have big enough chunks of time to work on it. I think when my daughter is in kindergarten and my son is in preschool, that will be a good time to start a new novel. I don?t want to complain, though?I am enjoying this time of my life, looking after my kids, and I am patient toward it. I?m working on a short story collection and I?ll start the next novel when I find the time.

    Freed Indian sailors finally home

EU naval force, SomaliaIn recent years, Somali pirates have carried out hundreds of attacks

Six Indian sailors, who were freed by Somali pirates recently after nearly 11 months in captivity, have arrived in the capital, Delhi.

The men were part of the 22-member crew of the Panama-flagged MV Suez cargo ship. The vessel was hijacked on 2 August last year.

Family members greeted the sailors as they arrived at the international airport in Delhi.

The hostages were released after $2.1m (£1.3m) was paid in ransom.

The negotiations with the pirates were carried out by Ansar Burney, a Pakistani human rights activist.

Mr Burney launched a fund-raising campaign for the release of the crew which included four Pakistanis.

The sailors arrived in the Pakistani city of Karachi on Thursday from where they were flown to Delhi on Friday morning.

Shamsher Singh, father of sailor Satnam Singh, was quoted by news agency Press Trust of India as saying that he had lost hope for the return of his son.

"I had lost hope completely. But after I spoke to Ansar Burney in April, my hope was rekindled," he said.

The family members of the sailors have criticised the Indian government for doing little to secure their release.

MV Suez, which had crew from Egypt, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India, came under small arms fire while sailing in a recommended shipping lane in the Gulf of Aden last August.

In recent years, Somali pirates have extended their reach further from the shores of East Africa and carried out hundreds of hijackings.

Somalia has had no functioning central government since 1991, allowing piracy to flourish off its coast.

Warships from around the world are patrolling the Indian Ocean in a bid to deter pirate attacks.

In February, a group of 28 suspected Somali pirates captured in the Indian Ocean were handed over to the Indian police.
