Another external requirement of good English is that it should have educative value. Below are given a few lines from the poem ?RAINBOW? composed by the eminent poet Wordsworth which are instructive:
My heart leaps up when I behold
A rainbow in the sky.
So was it when me life began,
So is it now I am a man,
So be it when I shall grow-old.
Or let me die!
It is the common experience of all that one feels highly elevated with pure thought when one looks at the moonlit sky, the starry galaxy, the sky scraping and snow-clad mountains, a river adoring its course, the multi-colored ( seven colors known in the order as VIBGYOR) rainbow, a garden of fragrant flowers having charming hues, the expanse of sea with ranges of corals and all these instruct one to be sober and to shed pride and be righteous.
Wordsworth has elevated in thoughts when he beheld the RAINBOW in the sky and was inspired to compose a poem on this natural phenomenon in the most instructive lines containing no clauses and phrases or figure of speech as the poet wanted to guide even a common man to appreciate nature.
These are thought provoking lines and the reader finds himself in a sober and elevated atmosphere while following these meaningful lines. Therefore educative value is one of the requirements of Good English.
Wordsworth produced a manner of poetry which was psychologically persuasive and grounded on straight autobiographical feel. Wordsworth?s poetry is differentiated by his straightforward use of language.
