Making wine has become an art form over the years and those people that get it just right are deservedly lauded the world over. One of the most distinguished practices around can prove to be extremely lucrative and some of the following wine producers are considered by many to be among the leading lights in the drink industry.
Picking out a favourite wine or two is by no means a simple process as there are so many different varieties that appeal to different people for different reasons. Opinion is always divided in terms of the taste and texture of a particular drop, which ensures it's highly unlikely to keep everyone happy after settling on which wine to drink. There are certain wines, though, that should be appreciated by one and all, like the following.
First up is the Villa Maria Wines . This family-owned winery is the most decorated in New Zealand, consistently winning international awards for the quality of its wines for over thirty years. One of the finest wines to come out of this vineyard is the Syrah, which is enjoying a growing reputation around the world. Its intensity leaves a lasting impression, with bursts of plum and black pepper complemented by hints of violets throughout. Villa Maria's Sauvignon Blanc is a real treat for the taste buds, too, with strong flavours of gooseberry and passion fruit swimming through it.
Now we come to the Chateau La Lagune . It's located in one of the most famous wine regions in the world, only a few miles from the French city of Bordeaux. Oaky wines are this chateau's speciality, all of which have a reputation for aging very well indeed. Pleasant yet powerful hints of toffee, vanilla and spices are spread across the range, which includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot (in order of abundance). La Lagune's 300 year history has led it to produce some incredibly high quality wines.
Over the border from France is another prolific and popular wine region, namely, Italy. Despite the fact there are so many excellent producers of wine in this particular part of Europe, one vineyard that deserves high praise is Antinori of Florence. A couple of classic wines to have emerged from these vineyards are the Solaia and Tignanello, which arguably must rank as the most famous drop produced by the winery. Tuscany is also renowned for its Chianti Classico wines and Antinori has been producing them since the 14th century.
No wine list is complete without mention of Rioja. La Rioja Alta produces from two wineries in the region, boasting a fruitful mix of old and new and separately focused on ageing and fermentation. Tempranillo is the main grape on the vineyards here, but it has recently been joined by Garnacha and Graciano. The tannins and aromatic fruits in Rioja wines leave you with a wonderful aftertaste.
Boschendal, a winery in South Africa that has been in operation since the 17th century, is another world-class producer that is held in high regard. Very much thought of as a New World winery, Boschendal turns out flavoursome, fresh and fruity wines from vineyards that span for six kilometres.
Last but not least, Australia's Penfolds Grange has a reputation that speaks for itself. For over a century and a half, it has been producing some of the best first growth wines in the world by sourcing its grapes from some of Australia's richest vineyards. Consequently, it boasts a diverse range of grapes from Grenache in the McLaren Vale vineyard to Sangiovese in the Barossa Valley vineyard.
