PROFITS: J.C. Penney reported net income of $14 million, or 7 cents per share, for the three months ended July 30.

REVENUE: Revenue fell to $3.91 billion from $3.94 billion in the year-ago period.

THE OUTLOOK: The company expects earnings per share to be in the range of 15 cents to 20 cents for the third quarter. Analysts had expected 27 cents per share.
