Your Diagnosis: Spine Cancer - South Florida Radiation Oncology ...

Last updated 1 hour 42 minutes ago

?Research shows that spinal metastases, or spinal cancer, affect more than 150,000 individuals in the United States each year?4,000 cases of which include benign spinal tumors and vascular malformations. If you?ve recently been diagnosed with spine cancer, then consider this overview on the disease and your treatment options.

What is Spine Cancer?

Spine cancer is a type of cancer that creates tumors in or surrounding the spinal cord. Spine cancer includes such types as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Tumors that begin in the spinal tissue itself are called primary spinal tumors, whereas those that metastasize or spread from the spine to another region are known as secondary spinal tumors. These tumors can occur inside the cord, within the meninges or membranes that cover the cord, or between the meninges and the spinal bones.

Signs and Symptoms

The symptoms of spine cancer will vary based on the location of the tumor?however, some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Abnormal sensations in the legs, hands, or fingers.
  • Back pain that may extend into the extremities.
  • Fecal and urinary incontinence.
  • Muscle contractions, muscle weakness, or loss of muscle function.

Treatment Options

While many patients turn to surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation treatments, CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery offers patients a revolutionary treatment option, providing rapid delivery of radiation to control tumors and provide pain relief. Spinal tumors can shift nearly 4 millimeters over a 15-minute period, and while IGRT and cone beam CT treatments may provide image guidance for pretreatment set-up, they are unable to recognize the targeted movements of these tumors, ultimately increasing the risk for the toxicity of sensitive structures. Fortunately, the CyberKnife System allows for continual image guidance to track, detect, and correct intra-fraction target movements of these tumors. This means that the CyberKnife system allows for an unprecedented 0.53 mm targeting accuracy in treating spinal lesions and tumors.

Greece to face inspectors, Merkel hints at bailout (Reuters)

ATHENS (Reuters) ? Greece's lenders are sending a team to Athens to inspect a government austerity plan they want implemented in exchange for aid, while Germany suggested a new bailout may have to be renegotiated.

Facing a wave of strikes and protests, Greece's Socialist government is accelerating its debt strategy to meet the terms of an International Monetary Fund and European Union rescue deal so it can receive a new loan next month and avoid bankruptcy.

The "troika" team of inspectors, which had threatened to cut off aid if Athens did not move faster, will begin talks on Thursday on a plan demanded by lenders to deepen budget cuts and raise taxes, which has set off protests not seen since June when riot police fought running battles with activists.

"I can confirm the Eurogroup (of euro zone ministers) will hold an additional meeting as soon as possible, still in October, to discuss the situation of Greece and consider the disbursement of the next tranche," a European Commission spokesman said in Brussels, announcing the troika's return.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel suggested that parts of a planned new 109-billion-euro ($148.6 billion) rescue for the debt-laden country could be reopened, depending on the outcome of the troika's audit.

"We have to wait and see what the troika ... finds and what it will tell us (whether) we will have to renegotiate or not," she told Greek state television NET, without elaborating.

Several hundred activists affiliated with the Greek Communists converged on the finance ministry on Wednesday waving a banner saying "We won't pay!." They planned to burn bills for a new one-off income tax introduced this summer, while Athens and other parts of the country were hit by transport strikes.

If deemed adequate by the inspectors, the new austerity drive will secure an 8-billion-euro loan Greece needs to pay bills and salaries in October and bring it closer to starting a second bailout agreed in July.

As a condition of the visit and to resolve the row with the lenders, the Greek government had promised to send a written assurance outlining its new plan to meet its bailout targets. Its contents have not been made public.

Germany has repeatedly said negotiations about the details of the second rescue deal can begin only when the troika says Greece has qualified to receive the tranche expected in October, the sixth under a first bailout agreed in 2010.

At the same time, leaders from around the world have urged euro zone capitals to end a tortuous debate and create a safety net big enough to prevent Greece's problems from spreading to other euro members and triggering a fresh global downturn.

DEBT SWAP DEBATE DEEPENS

The second bailout aims to ease Greece's debt burden by imposing a 21 percent loss on private Greek bondholders.

After intensifying debate among economists and policymakers that only a 50 percent loss would make the country's debt viable, more investors have signed up to the bond exchange plan, Greek financial daily Naftemporiki reported.

Citing an unidentified finance ministry official, it said Greece's weeks-long struggle to lure private bondholders into the rescue plan had ended with it reaching the 90 percent participation target.

The finance ministry declined to comment on the report.

There is no agreement yet among euro zone governments on whether a renegotiation is needed, including more pain for Greece's bank creditors, or on a U.S.-sponsored plan to leverage the bloc's rescue fund to give it more firepower.

Germany's Bundestag (lower house) will vote on Thursday on widening the scope of the European Financial Stability Facility bailout fund, as agreed by the EU leaders on July 21.

Merkel faces a revolt within her conservative camp and may have to rely on support from the opposition Social Democrats and Greens to get the measure approved, damaging her authority.

STRIKES GRIP GREECE

Late on Tuesday, police dispersed about 1,000 anti-austerity protesters with tear gas in Athens' Syntagma Square, the epicenter of anti-austerity protests.

Taxi drivers, bus and tram operators staged strikes on Wednesday, causing long traffic jams leading into the ancient city center and forcing luggage-hauling tourists scrambling to find rides to the airport.

Other trades ranging from craftsmen, printers and tax officials also staged stoppages and activists planned marches on

parliament and the port of Piraeus later in the day.

"I've been trying to find a job for a year now and it's impossible," said Maria Kappa, a graduate of the School of Philosophy in Athens. "I don't see the rich people hurt by this austerity, it's always the poor who have to pay."

Lawmakers opened the way to the troika visit on Tuesday by passing a property tax bill. That piles the pressure on Greeks suffering from several waves of belt-tightening and deepens an economic downturn heading into its fourth year.

Prime Minister George Papandreou's 154 Socialist deputies forced the measure through in the 300-seat parliament.

In the accelerated strategy, the government will cut the 730,000 public workforce by a fifth, reduce the public wage bill by 20 percent, as well as lower overall pensions by 4 percent in addition to a 10 percent cut already agreed in previous plans.

It will also now extend the new real estate tax until 2014, two years longer than originally planned, after the troika judged Greece's estimate that it would raise 2 billion euros a year to be too high.

Property Management - Real Estate Brokers Be Vigilant About Trust ...

Property Management - Trust Fund Accounts

Property management ? Fiscal Year 2010-2011 was a busy year for DRE auditors. DRE auditors?conducted 683 audits in the fiscal year ending 6/30/11 and found trust fund?shortages totaling $10,736,771.13. These shortages were found almost?exclusively on audits of brokers involved in property management,?broker escrow and private money mortgage loan activities.
Some other facts about these 2010-2011 audits:

?

?

  • Fifty of the audits completed had shortages of $10,000 or more.
  • 42% of the property management audits performed had trust fund shortages, with shortages totaling?? $5,343,398.55. 42% of these audits had major findings.
  • 39% of the broker escrow audits performed had trust fund?? shortages, with shortages totaling $4,162,011.44. 73% of these audits had major findings.
  • 27% of private money mortgage loan audits performed had trust fund shortages, with shortages totaling $692,481.63. 67% of these audits had?? major findings.

A disconcerting fact is that half of these large trust fund shortages?had the primary cause of shortage as Commingling/Conversion, meaning?that trust funds were used by the licensee for personal/business use. In?many cases, this use of trust funds was blatant and intentional. In other cases,?the broker in charge simply did not supervise operations, creating an environment where payment and deposit errors or improper?disbursements and transfers could take place (nearly 40% of the above cases included citation of a lack of supervision).

As examples of blatant misuse of trust funds this fiscal year, DRE?auditors have had recent cases of altered bank statements designed to?hide large trust fund shortages from the auditor, use of trust funds to?pay company business expenses (including, but not limited to, payroll?and tax levies), use of trust funds to purchase properties, cars, and?meals, pay for bail, and withdrawal of trust funds as cash. Auditors?have also found non-deposit and embezzlements of cash rents.

In other cases, brokers in charge fully relied on others to?maintain trust accounts without a system of oversight, including?review of transactions and monthly reconciliation of records and?bank statements, which resulted in loss of accounting control and?substandard recordkeeping, errors, and misuse of funds by others. In?the past fiscal year, Audits found many cases where a broker?s failure to?maintain proper records and recordkeeping procedures, separation of?duties, and oversight resulted in trust fund shortages over $50,000. In?other cases, fully relying on others to perform trust fund accounting?and handling is found to be just as dangerous. A broker who is not?active, competent or proficient in accounting oversight should avoid?trust fund handling.

?
The bottom line of the above statistics:

If your business handles trust funds, especially if you are in the property management, broker?escrow, or private money mortgage loan business, you need to be extra vigilant! A substantial percentage of our audits find trust fund?shortages when brokers are conducting these activities, due vigilance is required for property management.

A third of stars like our sun may have Earth-like planets (Yahoo! News)

CalTech study of Kepler results says numerous habitable exoplanets could exist

Several habitable Earth-like exoplanets have been spotted recently:?50 of them, in fact, by the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planetary Search (HARPS), including one that may be the?most Earth-like yet. But in the sheer vastness of space, our Earth is but a tiny speck, so more habitable (or?Goldilocks) planets are definitely out there.

To get an idea of the possible number and rate of Earth-like planets, Wesley Traub of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena took?Kepler observatory data, and used mathematical guesswork. The result? A third of all stars that are like our sun might have at least one Earth-like planet.

Kepler observatory scanned 150,000 stars within 136 days, and found evidence of?1,235 potential exoplanets or planets outside our solar system. A third of the overall number of planets Kepler discovered are too close to the sun (and hence, cannot support life) mainly due to Kepler's limitation ? Kepler isn't powerful enough to see planets in habitable areas, or areas far enough from the sun's heat.

For his?study, Traub narrowed the list down to FGK class stars, which according to?stellar classification are the stars most like our own sun. The result of his mathematical computations suggests that there are numerous terrestrial and habitable planets out there, with his definition of terrestrial being rocky planets half or twice the size of Earth that can sustain life. And while their existence cannot be proven right now, just the possibility of them really being out there fuels our drive to better our technology so that one day, we might catch a glimpse of a planet just like ours.

Rays beat Yankees, move into tie for wild card

Shields comes within one out of 12th complete game of season

Image: New York Yankees v Tampa Bay RaysGetty Images

Tampa Bay's Ben Zobrist, right, and Reid Brignac celebrate during their victory over the New York Yankees on Monday.

updated 10:32 p.m. ET Sept. 26, 2011

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon sat alone in his office, waiting for the reaction of his players gathered around a cluster of televisions in the middle of the clubhouse. The Rays beat the New York Yankees 5-2 on Monday night, then celebrated yet another loss that left the AL wild-card race tied with two games to go.

"I didn't want to expend any more energy in front of a TV," Maddon said. "It was fun to listen to guys from afar."

James Shields came within one out of his 12th complete game, yielding six hits. Kyle Farnsworth finished for his 24th save, closing it out moments before the Red Sox lost 6-3 at Baltimore. The Rays and Red Sox each have two games left.

"It's been a nice little run. All the stars have been aligned for us and here we are," Shields said. "This is what baseball is all about."

B.J. Upton drove in two runs with a third-inning double off Hector Noesi (2-2). Kelly Shoppach homered for the second straight day for the Rays, who've won three straight and are 14-7 since Sept. 4, when they trailed Boston by nine games. Johnny Damon's third-inning RBI single moved him into a tie with Lou Gehrig for 57th on the career hits list with 2,721.

Robinson Cano homered in the first and hit an RBI single in the third, giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead against Shields, who allowed just five baserunners over the last six innings. The All-Star right-hander walked three and struck out four to win for the first time in three starts.

"It's great. We're really into it. We feel good about this. We like our chances," Maddon said.

"There's a real strong believability about what we're trying to accomplish right now," the manager added. "It means something to be that far back at the beginning of this month and now we're tied with a couple of games to go. That's quite an accomplishment in and of itself. But when you get to this point, you really want to finish things off."

Shields (16-12) left after walking Eric Chavez. Farnsworth got Jesus Montero to ground out with a crowd of 18,772 on its feet. As the Rays retreated to the clubhouse, fans remained standing while watching a large video screen airing the ninth inning of the Red Sox-Orioles game.

There was an erupted of cheers when the Orioles got the final out.

"Our fate is in our hands," Shields said. "We don't have to worry about the Red Sox losing now. That feels really good, especially how far we were back."

"There's not a lot of people out there who had faith in us, but here we are," the pitcher added. "This is where we want to be. We're down to the last two games of the year, and we control our own fate."

The Yankees clinched the AL East title for the 12th time in 16 seasons last week during a 6-2 homestand in which they also helped the Rays by winning two of three against Boston. They flew to Florida following Sunday night's 14-inning loss to the Red Sox, arriving at their Tampa hotel around 5 a.m.

Even though New York also has clinched home-field advantage throughout the AL playoffs, manager Joe Girardi said he would play each game of this series to win while also trying to set his team up for the start of the playoffs on Friday.

"We're playing to win. I've got Bartolo (Colon) tomorrow and I've got a loaded bullpen. We're playing to win games, but I also have to pick the time I use my relievers," Girardi said. "If you get in some long games Friday and Saturday, I've got to make sure that they can go multiple innings. My responsibility is to this club."

That's exactly the way Maddon anticipated the Yankees approaching the week.

"I know they'll have to do some things with their playoff situation, but they're going to play it straight up I'm pretty sure. Even when they bring the reserves in, they're pretty good also," Maddon said before the game. "At the end of the day, the Rays have got to play. We have to win our own games and not worry about anybody else."

The Yankees rested starters Mark Teixeira and Nick Swisher, with Jorge Posada starting at first base and Eduardo Nunez in right field. Phil Hughes, who's been bothered by a sore back, was one of six pitchers Girardi used, pitching for the first time in two weeks and allowing no runs and one hit in 1 2-3 innings.

Noesi, a reliever making his second start in five days against the Rays, allowed three runs and five hits in two-plus innings. Damon drove in the final run charged to the Yankees starter with his RBI single off Raul Valdes, then the Rays ran themselves out of what could have been an even bigger inning.

With runners at first and third and one out, Damon and Evan Longoria were both caught stealing after Damon took off for second and stopped. Posada tagged Damon out from behind in a rundown, then threw to the plate to catch Longoria trying to score from third.

Posada also threw Upton out at the plate in the first, fielding a sharp grounder from Ben Zobrist before stepping on first and throwing to catcher Russell Martin, who put the tag on Upton to finish an inning-ending double play that protected a 1-0 lead.

Undeterred, the Rays kept pushing, playing the aggressive style that's helped them get back in the race.

"We don't worry about the Red Sox. We don't worry about anybody. We come out and play our game every night," Maddon said. "We've got to worry about beating the Yankees (Wednesday). If we take care of our own business, then the seconds, the minutes, the hours and the days take care of themselves."

NOTES: Martin was ejected in the fifth inning after exchanging words with plate umpire Paul Schrieber. ... Shields gave up a one-out single to Nunez in the seventh inning, them picked him off first base. His 13 pickoffs lead the majors. ... The Yankees plan to use Hughes twice out of the bullpen twice during this series. If he's on the postseason roster, Hughes would be a reliever. ... Girardi said backup C Francisco Cervelli, who has been on the DL since Sept. 13, experienced concussion-like symptoms while doing baseball activities before the game.

Wall Street flat after run-up (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were little changed on Wednesday with investors cautious after a three-day rally and ahead of an audit of Greece's finances to decide whether the nation gets more aid to avoid bankruptcy.

Inspectors from the European Union and International Monetary Fund headed to Greece to scrutinize new austerity measures they must endorse for Athens to get the next tranche of aid. Greece's parliament approved a deeply unpopular property tax on Tuesday.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel suggested that parts of a planned new $148.6 billion rescue for the debt-laden country could be reopened, depending on the audit's outcome.

Efforts to solidify a euro zone rescue fund and alleviate the region's sovereign debt crisis lifted stocks on Tuesday for a third consecutive session and came after four straight days of losses for the benchmark S&P 500. The S&P gained more than 4 percent over that three-day period.

"We came into today somewhat overbought, given the recent gains," said Katie Stockton, chief market technician at MKM Partners in Greenwich, Connecticut. "We were in store for a little pullback, and that's what we're getting."

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 56.38 points, or 0.50 percent, at 11,247.07. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 0.92 points, or 0.08 percent, at 1,176.30. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 3.55 points, or 0.14 percent, at 2,543.28.

Market direction also may be influenced by quarter-end "window dressing," as portfolio managers drop underperforming stocks and buy outperformers.

The material sector was by far the weakest on the S&P, dropping 2.1 percent. The group has rallied in recent session on optimism over developments in Europe.

Cliffs Natural Resources Inc sank 6.6 percent to $56.73 while Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc lost 4.4 percent to $33.29. Gold prices firmed, while crude was off 1.6 percent.

Amazon.com Inc gained 3 percent to $230.72 after it unveiled a new tablet computer with a $199 price tag. Apple Inc, which makes the popular iPad tablet, rose 0.3 percent to $400.61.

Microsoft Corp was the winners on the Dow, rising 1.1 percent to $25.96 after Samsung Electronics Co Ltd unveiled software pacts with the company.

In earnings news, Jabil Circuit Inc advanced 9.5 percent to $19.03 a day after reporting fourth-quarter earnings that beat expectations, while Family Dollar Stores Inc rose 1.2 percent to $54.83 after forecasting strong profits.

In the latest economic data, new orders for long-lasting U.S. manufactured goods slipped in August on weak demand for motor vehicles, but a rebound in a gauge of business spending suggested the economy would avoid another recession.

Newer Contraceptive Pills Could Raise Clot Risk, FDA Warns ...

By Amanda Gardner
HealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, Sept. 26 (HealthDay News) ? U.S. health officials issued a cautionary note Monday about an increased risk of blood clots in women taking newer forms of birth control pills, such as Yaz or Yasmin.

Although stopping short of a definitive statement, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did say it ?remains concerned? about a potentially higher risk of blood clots in women taking the ?fourth generation? pills containing drospirenone, a new type of synthetic progestin.

These new pills ? marketed as Yaz or Yasmin, among other brand names, in North America ? are popular, although the risk of blood clots, also known as venous thromboembolism (VTE), has been noted before.

VTEs are clots that typically originate in the legs and can travel to the lungs. They are best known as so-called ?economy class syndrome? because of cases occurring during long-haul flights, although experts warn that they can happen at any time. Symptoms include leg pain, chest pain or sudden shortness of breath.

Preliminary results of an FDA-funded study show a 50 percent increased risk of VTEs in women taking drospirenone-containing pills versus other hormonal contraceptives.

The risk to any one woman remains small: overall, the risk of a VTE is about six women per 10,000 users for the older contraceptives versus 10 per 10,000 using the newer versions, the FDA said.

The agency also reviewed six other studies on the subject, the results of which were conflicting. Two studies found no difference in risk, while another two found a 1.5-fold to 2-fold increased risk.

And two more studies, appearing earlier this year in the BMJ, found double to triple the risk.

The FDA issued a similar safety communication at the end of May, after the two BMJ studies came out.

Experts advise that women who have been on Yaz, Yasmin or similar drugs should not discontinue use without talking to their health care provider because they may not need to come off the pill at all. However, newcomers to the pill might consider older options.

?The question is, should patients who have been on it for years, should they switch? I think they should talk to their doctors,? said Dr. Jennifer Wu, an obstetrician/gynecologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. ?[And] I would not start patients on this pill. Blood clots are very serious. They can kill patients. With all the options we have, we should probably start [new patients] with safer contraceptive pills.?

Women with other additional risk factors for blood clots definitely should not be on drospirenone-containing pills, Wu added.

Risk factors for VTE include smoking, being overweight or a family history of blood clots.

The FDA statement released Monday noted that studies to date have only looked at pills containing drospirenone and a higher dose of estrogen, not those containing drospirenone and a lower dose of estrogen. So, it?s possible that some drospirenone-containing products may be safer than others.

This isn?t likely to be the last word on the matter, either: FDA advisory committees are scheduled to delve further into the matter at a December meeting, at which time the full findings of the agency-funded study will be released.

Discussing and documenting patients' preferences for care at the end of life does not cause them any harm, contrary to recent claims. A new study published today in the Journal of Hospital Medicine found that patients who talk with their physicians about end-of-life care and have an advance directive in their medical record have similar survival rates as patients who do not have these discussions and documents.

The study included 356 patients admitted at three different hospitals who had low or medium risks of dying within one year. Patients were followed from 2003 to 2009. During the study, there were no differences in survival for patients who had an end-of-life discussion and those who had not; there also were no survival differences for those who had a living will in their medical record and those who did not.

"Our findings are reassuring. They support health care providers, who can initiate these discussions, and policy makers, who seek to reimburse these time consuming discussions," said lead researcher Stacy M. Fischer, MD of the University of Colorado School of Medicine. "Most importantly, our findings are reassuring for patients and families who desire these discussions with their health care providers."

"The term 'death panels' has sparked considerable controversy recently. It has undermined the efforts of clinicians who provide end-of-life care by scaring patients into thinking that their lives may be cut short for their families' or society's best interest," added Fischer. "We hope our study provides data to help inform the national debate about advance directives for key stakeholders; health care providers, policy makers, and patients and families."

Longtime fugitive US hijacker caught in Portugal

This arrest photo taken Feb. 15, 1963 and provided by the New Jersey Department of Corrections shows George Wright while in custody for the 1962 murder of a gas station owner in Wall, N.J. Wright was arrested Sept. 26, 2011, by Portuguese authorities at the request of the U.S. government after more than 40 years as a fugitive, authorities said Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011. The FBI says Wright, who escaped the Bayside State Prison in Leesburg, N.J., in 1970, became affiliated with the Black Liberation Army and in 1972 he and his associates hijacked a Delta flight from Detroit to Miami. After releasing the passengers in exchange for a $1 million ransom, the hijackers forced the plane to fly to Boston, then on to Algeria. (AP Photo)

27, 2011. (AP) ? A 1970s militant who escaped from a murder sentence in New Jersey and carried out one of the most brazen hijackings in U.S. history was captured in Portugal after more than 40 years as a fugitive, authorities said Tuesday. After decades of stagnancy, there was a sudden break in the case when police matched his fingerprint to a resident ID card.

George Wright, 68, was arrested Monday by Portuguese authorities in a town near Lisbon at the request of the U.S. government, said a member of the fugitive task force that had been searching for him for nearly a decade.

Wright was convicted of the 1962 murder of a gas station owner in Wall, New Jersey. Authorities say Wright and three associates had already committed multiple armed robberies on Nov. 23, 1962, when he and another man shot and killed Walter Patterson, a decorated World War II veteran and father of two, during a robbery of the Collingswood Esso gas station in Wall.

Wright received a 15- to 30-year sentence and had served eight years when he and three other men escaped from the Bayside State Prison farm in Leesburg, New Jersey, on Aug. 19, 1970.

The FBI said Wright then became affiliated with an underground militant group, the Black Liberation Army, and lived in a "communal family" with several of its members in Detroit.

On July 31, 1972, Wright, dressed as a priest and using the alias the Rev. L. Burgess, hijacked a Delta Air Lines flight from Detroit to Miami accompanied by three men, two men and three small children from his communal group, including Wright's companion and their 2-year-old daughter, according to Associated Press reports at the time.

When the plane landed at the Miami airport, the hijackers demanded a $1 million ransom ? the highest of its kind at the time ? to free the 86 people on board. After an FBI agent delivered a 70-pound (32-kilogram) satchel full of money ? wearing only a pair of swim trunks, per the hijacker's instructions ? the passengers were released, according to AP accounts.

The hijackers then forced the plane to Boston, where an international navigator was taken aboard, and the group flew on to Algeria, where the hijackers sought asylum.

The group was taken in by Eldridge Cleaver, the American writer and activist, who had been permitted by Algeria's Socialist government to open an office of the Black Panther Movement in that country in 1970, after the Algerian president at the time professed sympathy for what he viewed as worldwide liberation struggles.

Algerian officials returned the plane and the money to the U.S. at the request of the American government, and briefly detained the hijackers before letting them stay. Coverage of the hijackers' stay in Algeria said their movements were restricted, and the president ignored their calls for asylum and requests to return them the ransom money.

The group eventually made its way to France, where Wright's associates were tracked down, arrested, tried and convicted in Paris in 1976. France refused to extradite them to the U.S., where they would have faced far longer prison sentences. According to news reports at the time, the defense hailed the light sentences they were given as "a condemnation of American racism" after the jury found "extenuating circumstances" in their actions, apparently agreeing with the defense's assertion that the hijacking had been motivated by "racial oppression in the United States."

But Wright remained at large, and his case was among the top priorities when the New York-New Jersey Fugitive Task Force was formed in 2002, according to Michael Schroeder, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service, who worked with New Jersey's FBI and other agencies on the task force.

The Department of Corrections brought along all its old escape cases nine years ago when the task force began operating, Schroeder said, and investigators started the case anew, never taking a prolonged break from working on it for the past nine years.

They looked at reports from the 1970s, interviewed Wright's victims and the pilots of the plane he hijacked. They had age-enhanced sketches made and tried to track down any communications he may have made with family in the U.S.

The address in Portugal was one of several on a list of places they wanted to check out. But Schroeder said there was nothing about it that made it seem especially promising. "It was another box to get checked, so to speak," he said.

That changed last week, when details started falling into place with the help of authorities there.

"They have a national ID registry," Schroeder said. "They pulled that. That confirmed his print matched the prints with the DOC. The sketch matched the picture on his ID card."

By the weekend, U.S. authorities were on a plane to Portugal. And Monday, Portuguese police staking out his home found him.

Schroeder said he has not been told what, if anything, Wright said when he was caught.

Wright made an initial court appearance in Portugal on Tuesday, according to Justice Department Spokeswoman Laura Sweeney. He was arrested for purposes of extradition on the state of New Jersey's homicide charge, and would serve the remainder of his sentence on that charge if returned to the U.S.

How to Recover Data From Your Memory Card | Data Recovery

Why is it that you only realize the problems with your PC backup strategy after something bad has happened? I thought I had a pretty good backup system, using a program called Cobian backup to backup my data to an external hard drive. The problem was that I let the drive fill up and I had not run a backup in a few months. Then my PC got zapped by lighting and I lost five months of digital photos.

Memory card data recovery to the rescue! Some files I was able to get off of my hard drive using Active File Recovery software, but one of the best ways I recovered data was right from my digital camera memory cards using a program called Photo-Saver. Even though the images had been deleted off the card, I was able to find months worth of photos still on the disk with the card recovery software. Between the 2 types of data recovery products I used I was able to salvage just about all of my precious family pictures.

Let us go forward with this short article. How does it work? Data recovery programs work by looking at the files that remain on a drive or card even after they?re deleted. Unless you have formatted the drive (which wipes everything clean) or over-written data onto the disk or card, a professional or special piece of software may be able to find the files remaining. Professional data recovery experts salvage important data from damaged computers with sophisticated technology, and charge a high price. Luckily I was able to do this myself when I needed to.

A few tips to keep in mind: if you want to recover files from your computer don?t make any changes or use the system. Download the recovery software from another PC. Install any recovery software onto a CD or flash drive. Likewise, if you?re trying to recover files from your camera memory card, download the software onto a PC and run it from there. You never want to do anything with the damaged drive except when the recovery software tells you to in order to preserve whatever is there.

Now I?ve purchased a new larger external hard drive and have my scheduled backups running again. However it?s great to know that I?ve that little software package just in case I need it.

Avoiding Global Warming Stories

I got a call the other day from some producers I very much admire. They wanted to talk about a series next year on global warming and I thought, why does this subject make me instantly tired? Global warming is important, yes; controversial, certainly; complicated (OK by me); but somehow, even broaching this subject makes me feel like someone's put heavy stones in my head. Why is that?

There's not much question the world is getting warmer. We can measure temperatures in conspicuous places (what used to be snowy mountaintops, vast glaciers, the once-icy Arctic sea) and inconspicuous places (ocean surfaces, temperate zones) and facts are facts: temperatures are rising.

The Many Causes

The question, of course, is why. And here there are a great clump of possible causes: it's the sun's fault; it's some complex cycle of sun/planets and orbital paths; it's coal, it's methane, it's smokestacks; it's us ? this vast, increasingly citified, increasingly prosperous blob of humans trying, sloppily, to make a better life for ourselves and our kids and in the process, making the atmosphere warmer.

The true explanation may be some of those. It's probably all of them. And without getting too particular about which is the preeminent one, if the "us" cause is a plausible contributor (and I think it is), then as reasonable people, we should be able to change our behavior to reduce our contribution. But for some reason, reasonable people have been missing in this discussion.

Why the Anger?

Instead of saying, OK, what do we do? How much remediation can we afford? Instead of arguing over strategies, the argument instead goes straight to war, to suspicion, to anger.

And why is that?

There are, of course, global warming zealots and global warming absolute deniers. Most people, I figure, live in the middle, a bit cloudy about the data, a bit weary of the hysterics on either side, and worried both ways, about the costs of changing our ways and the costs of doing nothing. I am one of those who say even if the evidence isn't all in, let's be prudent; let's change our behavior.

But on the "skeptic" side, there's a kind of growl in response. And it doesn't come from people who aren't informed; they are often very informed. When they write in to NPR, they cite study after study; a recent paper by Dan Kahan and colleagues at Yale Law School found the more scientifically literate and numerate you are, the less likely you are to see climate change as a serious threat. So this isn't about a lack of science knowledge or that there aren't scientific questions to wonder about. It's not that the skeptics don't have an argument, it's how they argue. It's the anger. That's what puzzles me.

Tell Me, Says Ursula Goodenough

One of the most troubling and thoughtful blog posts this year here at NPR was written by Ursula Goodenough, over at 13.7. She's a professor of biology at Washington University in St. Louis, and the author of an eloquent book about spirituality and science. Last June, she asked her readers, if you are a global warming skeptic, what makes you so angry? Or as she politely put it, "What motivates a denier?" She was deluged.

Eight hundred fifty-nine people responded, some of them skeptics, but, this being NPR, lots of them were Global Warming Worriers who had "thoughts" about skeptics. Professor Goodenough did what a scientist and teacher would naturally do; she sorted her reader mail into categories and described what she'd learned ? from both sides. The skeptics, she found, were more than skeptical. They were convinced that "the climate-change argument has been either grossly exaggerated or downright falsified, they weren't buying it."

You Guys Blew It

Why would scientists (of all people) lie about data? The skeptics, she reported, believed "that the scientists were lining their pockets and/or in cahoots with Big Government to change America as we know it. ..." As one of them wrote her:

For thirty years I was told the world was going to end and it didn't. All these scary predictions were based on computer models not actual data and they never came true. And the solution always seemed to involve some bicycle riding elitist regulating my life and taking my money. You guys blew it.

This has become a standard theme: that the people who say we should tighten our belts and live with less are the people who've already got theirs; they don't want to give the strivers the same chance. Thus, the anger. The Warming Worriers, of course, have their own explanations for what's going on. They seem to think the anger comes from a more deeply rooted, even biological place. Here's Professor Goodenough's summary of their views (with headlines added by me):

[INERTIA]:The default setting of the American people is inertia. We tend not to favor things that require a change in our habits, let alone gluttonous creature comforts.

[NOW-ness ]: There was a 10-minute lecture by Dr. Gilbert of Harvard that explains this pretty well. He states that humans have evolved to react quickly to events that are Intentional, Immoral, Imminent, and Instantaneous. Global warming has none of these properties, whereas Terrorism has all of them. Hence we fear Terrorism but not Global Warming.

[ME-ness]: It's something called "inferred justification." ... Essentially people approach things with pre-determined beliefs and then seek out facts to validate their own views and ignore facts that don't support their views. ... This is why the respondents respond with tons of links. They don't care what the facts are, they just want their belief system validated.

[I HATE THAT GUY]: There's no one motivator, I don't think. For some it's politics ? "If the liberals/hippies/Democrats are saying it's true, I must assert that it's false!" ? and for others, in America at least, I suspect it's related to our deep (and deeply annoying) cultural bias against the very idea of expertise.

[WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL?]: For my dad it was not accepting the idea that human beings, when faced with cataclysmic change, would be harmed by that change instead of adapting to it.

[I SMELL A PLOT ... ]: Many deniers I speak with really believe climate change is a conspiracy among Eurocrats and America Haters worldwide to "bring us down to their level."

When she was done summarizing, Ursala Goodenough concluded, "I'm not finding many take-homes in all this. The whole experience has left me pretty weary and disheartened." Me too. That's the puzzler here. How do scientists (or reporters) talk about a science question that so many people think is a plot? Or, for those of us who aren't angry, just paralyzed, how do we address a problem that seems so vast, complex and beyond our ability to fix?

A Happy Ending?

Well, the wonderful thing about Goodenough's blog post is she took that extra step. What she suggested makes sense to me. It came to her while reading a commencement address at Kenyon College by the writer Jonathan Franzen. Franzen told his audience he was not especially interested in environmental issues. "I liked the natural world. Didn't love it, but definitely liked it," he said. Yes, he worried about global warming, overcrowding, habitat destruction and all the rest, but then, about 20 years ago ...

I made a conscious decision to stop worrying about the environment. There was nothing meaningful that I personally could do to save the planet, and I wanted to get on with devoting myself to the things I loved. I still tried to keep my carbon footprint small, but that was as far as I could go. . .. BUT then a funny thing happened to me. It's a long story, but basically I fell in love with birds. Whenever I looked at a bird, any bird, even a pigeon or a robin, I could feel my heart overflow with love. ...And now, not merely liking nature but loving a specific and vital part of it, I had no choice but to start worrying about the environment again. ... Now those threatened forests and wetlands and oceans weren't just pretty scenes for me to enjoy. They were the home of animals I loved.

And this, Goodenough suggests, is the key. Everybody, deniers, skeptics, worriers, Greens, all of us connect at some point with other living things, at the pet store, in our gardens, in our backyards, in woods, rivers, hunting, hiking, gazing. We do this every day. Anger isn't an issue when you start with birds you love, roses you love, woods you love, and step by step you find yourself thinking about loving all of it, the whole web of it. These connections, says Franzen, can run deep:

Which is what love will do to a person. Because the fundamental fact about all of us is that we're alive for a while but will die before long. This fact is the real root cause of all our anger and pain and despair. And you can either run from this fact or, by way of love, you can embrace it.

When you stay in your room and rage or sneer or shrug your shoulders, as I did for many years, the world and its problems are impossibly daunting. But when you go out and put yourself in real relation to real people, or even just real animals, there's a very real danger that you might love some of them.

And who knows what might happen to you then?

`SNL' opens with a record, new ice cream proposal (AP)

NEW YORK ? "Saturday Night Live" opened its 37th season with a disputed hosting record and a defense of the new controversial Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavor.

Alec Baldwin, hosting for the 16th time, staked his claim to the hosting record Saturday night. His friend Steve Martin, who formerly tied for the record with Baldwin, made sure Baldwin's accomplishment was legitimate by conducting a drug test, overseen by alleged expert Seth Rogen.

Baldwin also responded to protests of the new Ben & Jerry's flavor, Schweddy Balls, named after a late `90s sketch featuring Baldwin. In his monologue, Baldwin said there was a new flavor being released for the flavor's critics: "Go Fudge Yourself." A group of mothers, One Million Moms, has threatened to boycott the ice cream maker.
